SASS (Students Appreciating Safe Streets) is an initiative being lead by the North Central Alliance Partners in Prevention Community Coalition. The purpose of the SASS project is to involve kids and teens in a kind of service learning that educates teens on what our law enforcement officers and fire department do to keep our streets safe, why the legal drinking age is 21, or why the effects of effects of drinking or drugging and then driving are all too often lethal for teens!
For the service piece of the initiative, student clubs/organizations/or classes are assigned a weekend/month/or holiday to plan an appreciation project for our local law enforcement officers and/or local fire department men and women! They can make cards, banners, cookies, write letters, or anything creative to show these local heroes that we appreciate the work they do to keep our streets safe!
The paper work an officer has to complete in order to make a DUI arrest is twice the amount he/she has to complete to make a murder arrest! Our officers need to be supported in the tough calls they have to make in order to keep our community safe and drug free! Our rescue workers are called upon to see first hand the gruesome and tragic results of underage drinking and substance abuse. We want to show them that we appreciate what they do, and that our community’s youth are committed to influencing others to abstain from alcohol use, drugs, and driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs.
We encourage ALL student organizations, clubs, classes, and teams to be involved with this initiative. Your club’s primary focus does not have to be substance abuse or related choices. We need student leaders from all areas (sports, dance, cheer, academic, social, service clubs, classrooms) to get involved with this initiative. *Education and service projects will be age/grade level appropriate.
